About the Course

Are you a visual learner?

Do you want to know more about how films make meaning?

Do you hunger to know more about customs, ideas, and thoughts of people who speak the second-most frequent language in the world?

Join us to experience the culture of various Hispanic communities abroad and in the US through analyzing film.  This introductory course requires no previous experience in film or language.

This course is taught in English and fulfills the University Core Requirement for “Human Cultures:  Humanities (H).”  It also satisfies a mandatory requirement for the Film and Video Studies major and minor.

Course Goals

  • Gain a general knowledge of film history and key directors in Spain and Hispanic America
  • Demonstrate critical thinking about Hispanic cultures
  • Develop tools for viewing and analyzing Hispanic cinema

Learning Resources

All readings and assignments will be available on Blackboard, so there is no cost for textbooks. Students are responsible for getting access to a streaming service in order to view the required films. All the films are available on Hulu.

Theme I: Cinema of Spain, May 16-20

Theme II: Cinema of Argentina, May 23-27

Theme III: Cinema of Mexico, May 30- June 3

Theme IV: Hispanic Cinema in the US; Cinema of other Hispanic countries, June 6-10

Format: The course is entirely online, and so you can do this course anywhere that you can get access to a reliable internet connection that will allow you to stream film. You do not have to come to campus at all.

Assessments: There are no exams in this course. The course assignments have deadlines, but there is nothing in the course that requires you to be on your computer at a specific time. This means that you can arrange your course work around other things you are doing.
